Trivenz Side Effects

Trivenz is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication used for HIV treatment that includes efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. Like other antiretroviral therapy, it can cause a range of side effects, from mild to potentially severe.[2]

Common side effects include:

  • Sleep disturbances (including vivid dreams or nightmares)[7]
  • Mood changes (such as anxiety and depression)[7]
  • Rash[7]
  • Fatigue[1]
  • Diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset[1]
  • Headache and dizziness[2]
  • Mild nausea or vomiting[3]

Potentially serious side effects may include:

  • Liver toxicity or hepatitis[7]
  • Lactic acidosis (dangerously high acid levels in the blood)[1][3]
  • Renal (kidney) dysfunction or failure[5]
  • Bone loss or decreased bone mineral density[1]
  • Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions, which may present as fever, nausea, vomiting, rash, headache, or muscle pains[3]
  • Lipid (cholesterol or triglyceride) changes[7]
  • Heart rhythm changes, particularly if predisposed by existing heart conditions[5]

Side effects are often linked to the efavirenz component, especially neurological symptoms (such as vivid dreams or mood changes). Taking Trivenz at bedtime and on an empty stomach may help reduce some of these side effects.[2][7]

Some people may be more susceptible to side effects or may need to avoid Trivenz, including those with moderate or severe kidney impairment, a history of severe liver problems, or certain heart conditions. It is important to notify your healthcare provider of any new or unusual symptoms, especially if severe reactions or hypersensitivity occur.[5]
