Temgesic (buprenorphine) can cause a range of side effects, including both common and rare reactions.
Common side effects include:
- Constipation, nausea, and vomiting[5]

- Dizziness or fainting[3][5]
- Sweating and dry mouth[3][5]
- Toothache, mouth numbness or redness, tongue pain[6]
- Mood changes, nervousness, or depression[3]

- Muscle aches, cramps, pain in the back, arms, legs, joints[4]
- Itching, rash, and skin reactions at the injection or patch site[3][4][7]
- Upset stomach, heartburn, flatulence[3][7]
- Flu-like symptoms such as chills, fever, sore throat, and cough[4]
- Abnormal liver function[4]
Less common or rare side effects may include:
- Loss of appetite, diarrhea[3][6]
- Hives, hypersensitivity reactions[3][6]
- Weakness, malaise, trembling, or slurred speech[3]
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears), blurred or double vision[3][7]
- Difficulty urinating, changes in blood pressure[3]
- Convulsions, lack of coordination, hallucinations[3]
- Rare but serious allergic reactions, including difficulty breathing, swelling, or anaphylaxis[3][6]
Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include:
- Significant respiratory depression or trouble breathing[5][6]
- Extreme drowsiness, confusion, or loss of consciousness[1][5]
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat[3][6]
- Severe allergic reactions (including skin rash, hives, or difficulty breathing)[3][6]
- Signs of overdose: slow/shallow breathing, cold and clammy skin, loss of consciousness, irregular heartbeat, or blue lips/fingernails[1]
Some side effects, such as mild nausea, constipation, or headache, may lessen as your body adjusts to Temgesic. However, any unusual, severe, or persistent symptoms should be reported to a healthcare provider promptly.
