Levofloxacin is a widely used antibiotic, but it can cause a range of side effects, from mild to severe. The most common side effects include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)

These common side effects are often mild and may go away as your body adjusts to the medication. However, if they persist or worsen, it’s recommended to contact your healthcare provider[1][5][6].

Serious and rare side effects can also occur. These may include:

  • Severe allergic reactions: rash, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, difficulty breathing or swallowing[2][6].
  • Tendonitis or tendon rupture: sudden pain, swelling, stiffness or bruising, especially in the Achilles tendon[1][3].
  • Central nervous system (CNS) effects: confusion, agitation, tremors, hallucinations, seizures, or memory problems[1][3][4].
  • Peripheral neuropathy: numbness, tingling, or burning pain in the hands, arms, legs, or feet, which may persist after stopping the medication[1][3].
  • Liver damage: jaundice, dark urine, abdominal pain, unexplained tiredness, or loss of appetite[1][2][5].
  • Heart rhythm changes: irregular or fast heartbeat, fainting, chest pain (QT prolongation or rare aortic damage)[1][4].
  • Severe low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): sweating, irritability, hunger, palpitations, confusion, or coma, especially in patients taking diabetes medications[3][4][6].
  • Abnormal bruising or bleeding
  • Severe skin reactions: blistering, peeling, fever, sore throat, or widespread rash[3][5].

Precautions should be taken for certain groups:

  • Elderly individuals and those taking corticosteroids may have increased risk for tendon rupture[1].
  • Children are at risk for joint or bone issues and should not receive levofloxacin unless specifically indicated[2].
  • People with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar levels closely[6].

If any serious symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately. Always use levofloxacin as prescribed and inform your doctor about any unusual reactions[1][2].
