Laxette Solution, depending on the formulation, may contain either senna (a stimulant laxative) or liquid paraffin (a lubricant laxative), and sometimes both. Side effects can vary depending on the active ingredient.
For Laxette Solution containing liquid paraffin:
- Softening of stools and gentle relief of constipation[6]
- May rarely cause abdominal discomfort or, in cases of prolonged use, dependency on the laxative for bowel movements[6]
- Safe for adults and children under medical supervision when used briefly and as directed
- Inadequate intake of fluids may reduce effectiveness and increase the risk of side effects
For senna-based Laxette Solution (Senna alexandrina):
- Cramping and abdominal pain
- Diarrhoea and loose stools
- Excessive use can cause dehydration and imbalance of body electrolytes
- In rare cases, allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing
- Long-term or excessive use may cause dependency or worsen bowel function[5]
Serious Side Effects (for all types of laxatives):
- Severe or persistent diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
- Symptoms of electrolyte imbalance, such as muscle cramps, weakness, or irregular heartbeat[3][5]
- Severe allergic reactions: swelling of the lips, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing; hives; or skin rash[3][7]
- Dependency and reduced natural bowel function with overuse[5]
If you experience any severe or unusual symptoms while using Laxette Solution, consult a healthcare provider promptly.
