Common side effects of Clear Cough syrup include sedation such as drowsiness, inability to concentrate, lassitude (fatigue), dizziness, low blood pressure (hypotension), muscular weakness, and incoordination[1].
Less frequent side effects may involve headache, heart palpitations, pale skin, confusion, back or abdominal pain (possible signs of abnormal red blood cells), sore mouth, skin, or throat, cough, breathing difficulties, fever, chills, body aches (possible abnormal white blood cells), bleeding gums, nosebleeds, rashes, blood in urine, easy bruising (possible abnormal blood platelets), lack of appetite (anorexia), blurred vision, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and elation (high spirit)[1].
If you experience any severe allergic reaction—such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of face or throat, or severe drowsiness—seek immediate medical attention[3].
Some Clear Cough formulations may also cause additional effects like headache, sleep problems (insomnia), upset stomach, diarrhea or constipation, dry mouth, blurred vision, mild dizziness, trouble concentrating, feeling restless or excited (especially in children), mild skin rash, and rarely, symptoms like seizures, irregular heartbeat, confusion, hallucinations, slow or shallow breathing, tremor, flu symptoms, unusual bleeding or bruising, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)[7].
Using cough syrups containing codeine or dextromethorphan in doses higher than recommended can result in dangerous or life-threatening effects, including loss of consciousness, seizures, respiratory depression, addiction risk, and, in rare cases, death[2][3][6].
