Zoxadon (containing risperidone) is associated with a range of side effects, from common to less frequent and rare, affecting various body systems.[2]

Common side effects include:

  • Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and restlessness[3][7]
  • Difficulty with body movements, imbalance, and involuntary muscle spasms (parkinsonism, dystonia, tremor)[7]
  • Difficulty concentrating, anxiety, agitation, and trouble sleeping[7]
  • Blurred vision or other changes in vision[7]
  • Increase in urination, problems with urination[7]
  • Skin rash or itching[7]

Less frequent or rare side effects include:

  • Infections (respiratory, bladder, eye, skin, or nail-related)[1]
  • Blood cell changes: anemia, decreased red or white blood cells[1][5]
  • Diabetes or high blood sugar, excessive thirst[1][7]
  • Confusion and changes in mental state[1][7]
  • Sleep-related eating disorder[1]
  • Movement disorders such as tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled twitching in face, tongue, or limbs)[1][7]
  • Eye issues: dry eye, increased tears, redness, oversensitivity to light[1]
  • Vertigo, ringing in the ears, ear pain[1]
  • Low blood pressure[1]
  • Digestive issues: hard stool, difficulty swallowing, incontinence, increased gas[1]
  • Skin problems: hives, itching, hair loss, eczema, discoloration, acne[1][7]
  • Muscle weakness, joint swelling, neck pain[1][7]
  • Changes in sexual function (erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorder, decreased libido), breast swelling in men, menstrual disorders, vaginal discharge[1]
  • Coldness in extremities, decreased body temperature[1]

Serious side effects may require immediate medical attention:

  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing, rash, hives)[3]
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS): high fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, changes in breathing or heart rate, sweating—this can be life-threatening[3][7]
  • Sudden weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or vision changes (may indicate stroke or serious neurological effect)[1][7]
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising, or signs of infection such as fever in patients with low white blood cell counts[5]
  • Prolonged or inappropriate erection[7]

Additional warnings:

  • In elderly patients with dementia, Zoxadon may increase the risk of stroke or death and should be used with extreme caution[1][4].
  • Zoxadon may interact with medications for Parkinson’s disease, reducing their effectiveness[2].
