Volutrip, a fixed-dose combination of dolutegravir, lamivudine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, is used in the treatment of HIV-1. Like other antiretroviral medications, Volutrip may cause side effects, ranging from mild to potentially serious.
Common side effects:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Tiredness
- Muscle or joint pain
- Difficulty sleeping
- Dizziness
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain
- Gas
These symptoms are often mild and may diminish as your body adjusts to the medication.[7][1][5]
Serious side effects (seek medical attention if any of these occur):
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
- Dark urine or light-colored stools
- Nausea or vomiting not associated with mild side effects
- Loss of appetite, extreme tiredness or weakness
- Pain or tenderness in the upper abdomen
- Blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
- Sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips
- Hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Red, irritated, or swollen eyes
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Chest tightness, rapid or irregular heartbeat, fainting
- Severe muscle pain, cramping, or stiffness
- Blisters or sores in the mouth
- Signs of severe allergic reaction, such as rash with fever, generally ill feeling, or muscle/joint aches
Some serious adverse reactions reported in clinical use with similar medicines (due to nucleoside analogues) include lactic acidosis (a buildup of lactic acid in the blood), severe hepatomegaly with steatosis (liver enlargement and fatty liver, potentially fatal), hypersensitivity or severe allergic reactions, and acute worsening of hepatitis B in co-infected individuals when stopping treatment.[4][6][3][7][1][5]
Additional rare but possible side effects:
- Confusion
- Sleepiness
- General feeling of discomfort or illness
- Discharge or excessive tearing from the eyes
- Numbness, tingling, or burning in hands or feet due to nerve problems
- Bone loss
- Kidney, liver, or pancreas damage
- Mood changes
- Bleeding, especially in patients with clotting disorders
Not all patients will experience these side effects, and many are uncommon.[1][5]
If you experience side effects that are severe, do not go away, or are concerning, contact your healthcare provider immediately. This is not an exhaustive list; always consult the package insert or your doctor for a full listing of potential side effects.
