Macropen 500 Side Effects

Macropen 500 (macrolide antibiotic, also known as midecamycin) may cause a variety of side effects. Some of these side effects can be serious and require urgent medical attention.

  • Skin reactions, such as rashes or lesions (Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction)
  • Cloudy, foamy, or bad-smelling urine, increased need to urinate (crystalluria)
  • Painful throat
  • Premature destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia), leading to pale skin, weakness, or breathlessness
  • Fever, chills, swelling, sore throat, and fatigue, which could indicate a low white blood cell count (leukopenia, agranulocytosis)
  • Unusual or unexplained bruising or bleeding due to low blood platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Painful, stiff neck with limited range of motion and high fever (aseptic meningitis)
  • Convulsions (fits)
  • Stomach pain and cramping, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, swollen stomach, diarrhea (possibly with pus or mucus in stool), tiredness, fever, dry mouth, and feeling extremely thirsty
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark urine, and light coloured stools (jaundice)
  • Changes in urination, blood in the urine, swelling (interstitial nephritis)

These are considered serious side effects and may require urgent medical attention.[1]

Other side effects include:

  • Headache (frequent)
  • Fungal infections of the skin, nails, mouth, throat, or vagina (less frequent)
  • Increased bleeding time when injured
  • Excessive involuntary movements (hyperkinesia), distractibility, inability to focus (hyperactivity), dizziness
