Indomethacin Side Effects

The most common side effects of indomethacin include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, headache, dizziness, tiredness, and ringing in the ears[1][2][4]. Some people may also experience upset stomach or general gastrointestinal discomfort[4][5].

Serious side effects are less common but can be severe. These may include:

  • Heart attack symptoms (such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or discomfort in the upper body)[1][3][5]
  • Stroke symptoms (including face drooping, arm weakness, and difficulty speaking)[1][3][5]
  • High blood pressure, which may present as a dull headache, dizziness, or nosebleeds[1][3]
  • Heart failure, presenting with swelling of the ankles or feet, sudden weight gain, or tiredness[1][2]
  • Kidney problems (e.g., changes in urination, swelling of the feet or ankles, or shortness of breath)[1][2]
  • Stomach or intestinal bleeding (such as black, tarry stools or vomiting blood)[1][2][5]
  • Anemia (e.g., shortness of breath, weakness, pale skin, fast heartbeat)[1][2]
  • Severe skin reactions, including rash, blisters, and fever[1][3][4]
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as trouble breathing, swelling of the throat, tongue, or lips[1][2][3][4]
  • Liver problems (including yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, fatigue, itching, or flu-like symptoms)[1][2][3][4]
  • Neurological effects, such as tremors, seizures, depression, confusion, or psychosis[3]
  • Visual changes[3]
  • Asthma attacks in susceptible individuals[1]

Rare but potentially life-threatening complications such as anaphylaxis (a severe allergic response) and DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms) have also been reported[4][6].

Long-term use, higher doses, or use in elderly patients increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events (such as heart attack and stroke) and gastrointestinal events (such as serious bleeding or ulceration). These complications may occur at any time, sometimes without warning symptoms[5].
