Snuff is a form of smokeless tobacco that can cause a range of significant side effects and health risks, despite not being smoked.
- Addiction: Like all tobacco products, snuff contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Blood nicotine levels in snuff users are generally as high as those in smokers, and withdrawal can lead to intense cravings, depressed mood, and irritability[1][7].
- Cancer Risk: Snuff use significantly increases the risk of several cancers, including oral (mouth, cheek, tongue, and gums), esophageal, pancreatic, and possibly bladder cancer. This is due to exposure to high levels of cancer-causing chemicals such as tobacco-specific nitrosamines[1][2][3][5][7][8].
- Cardiovascular Disease: Multiple studies link snuff to an increased risk of fatal coronary heart disease, stroke, and non-fatal ischemic heart disease, as well as a general increased mortality risk from cardiovascular causes[1][3][5].
- Dental and Oral Health Issues: Snuff can stain and yellow teeth, sour breath, cause tooth decay, gum infections, jaw complications, and in severe cases, bone loss and facial disfigurement[1][3][7].
- Complications During Pregnancy: Pregnant snuff users face higher chances of premature birth, stillbirth, lower birth weight, and possible developmental problems in the baby’s brain[1][3][5].
- Other Health Risks: Long-term use is also associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes[6], toxic metal exposure, asthma, reproductive system abnormalities, and generally lower health-related quality of life, including bodily pain and less vitality[5][8].
There is no safe level of snuff use, and it is not considered a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes. Quitting snuff can be as challenging as quitting smoking[1][5].
