Puritone Bisacodyl Laxative is used to relieve occasional constipation and typically produces a bowel movement within 6 to 12 hours[4]. The main active ingredient is bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative. Like all medications, it may cause side effects, ranging from common to rare and serious events.
Common side effects include:
- Abdominal discomfort, cramps, or pain[5]
- Diarrhea[1]
- Nausea or vomiting[1]
- Weakness[3]
Less common or rare side effects may include:
- Dizziness or fainting (possibly due to abdominal spasm or defecation)[5]
- Rectal discomfort or anorectal discomfort[5]
- Haematochezia (blood in stool)[5]
- Dehydration, especially with overuse[5]
- Colitis, including ischaemic colitis (very rare)[5]
Allergic reactions are rare but may be serious, including symptoms such as:
- Rash, itching, or hives
- Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
- Trouble breathing or swallowing[1]
With high doses or chronic misuse, more serious complications can occur:
- Watery stools and severe diarrhea leading to fluid and electrolyte imbalances
- Chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain
- Hypokalaemia (low potassium), which can cause muscle weakness and, in severe cases, cardiac abnormalities
- Renal calculi and possible kidney/renal damage
- Colonic atony (loss of muscle tone in the bowel)[5][7]
Precaution: Prolonged or excessive use of stimulant laxatives like Puritone is not recommended, as this can increase the risk of side effects and lead to dependence[7]. Always use as directed and contact a healthcare professional if you experience serious or bothersome symptoms.
