Primolut N Side Effects

Primolut N can cause a range of side effects, which may vary in severity and occurrence from person to person[1].

  • Bleeding and Menstrual Changes: Abnormal uterine/vaginal bleeding, spotting, irregular bleeding, absence of menstruation (amenorrhea), and changes in bleeding patterns are among the most common side effects[1][4][6].
  • Reproductive and Breast Effects: Breast tenderness, breast pain, and possible discharge[3][4].
  • Nervous System: Headache, including migraines, dizziness, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, drowsiness, fatigue, depression, and occasional shaking movements (tremors)[2][4][5].
  • Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and dry mouth[3][4][5].
  • Skin and Allergic Reactions: Rash, itching, hives (urticaria), acne, excessive sweating, hair loss, and rarely, hirsutism (increased hair growth)[2][5].
  • Vision and Eye Effects: Visual disturbances may occur in some individuals[1][5].
  • Respiratory: Shortness of breath and, uncommonly, difficulty breathing may signal allergic reactions and require urgent medical consultation[1][5].
  • Serious Risks: Blood clots (including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism), marked increase in blood pressure, and, in rare cases, signs resembling Cushing’s syndrome (fatty hump between the shoulders, rounded face, pink or purple stretch marks), development of jaundice or hepatitis[2][6].
  • Other Effects: Weight gain, changes in cervical excretions, high fever, and possible swelling of the face, tongue, or throat due to severe allergic reaction (angioedema)[2][6].

Most side effects occur during the first month of treatment and may resolve with time[2][5]. If any of these symptoms are severe, persistent, or if you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness), immediate medical attention is advised[1][3]. Women are also advised to stop smoking while on Primolut N, as it can increase the risk of adverse effects[3]. Use of Primolut N is not recommended for those with severe liver disease or during pregnancy[4].
