Pantoprazole 40 mg is a proton pump inhibitor commonly used to reduce stomach acid. Like all medications, it can cause side effects. The most common side effects include:

- Irregular, fast, or pounding heartbeat, uncontrollable shaking, seizures, muscle spasms, or excessive tiredness (potential signs of low magnesium)[1][3][5][7]
- New or worsening joint pain, or rash that worsens with sunlight—possible lupus symptoms[1][3][5]
- Severe diarrhea with watery stools, fever, or stomach pain (potential sign of *C. difficile* infection)[1][3][5][7]
- Changes in urination, blood in urine, kidney pain (possible kidney problems)[1][3][5][7]
- Neurological symptoms such as numbness or tingling in hands and feet, or trouble with coordination (possible vitamin B12 deficiency after long-term use)[3][5]
Other potential risks associated with long-term use (especially at high doses or beyond one year) include:
- Increased risk of bone fractures (wrist, hip, spine)[1][5]
- Development of fundic gland polyps (growths on the stomach lining)[1][3]
