Farxiga Side Effects

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) can cause a range of side effects, from mild to serious. The most common side effects include:

  • Genital yeast infections (in both men and women)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Increased urination, including needing to urinate more often or in larger amounts
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Stuffy or runny nose and sore throat
  • Pain in the back, arms, or legs
  • Weight loss
  • High cholesterol
  • Cold- or flu-like symptoms

Most of these side effects are mild and may improve as your body gets used to the medication[1][2][3][5][6].

Serious side effects (rare but potentially life-threatening) can include:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing)
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA): Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, feeling tired or confused, trouble breathing, and fruity- or sweet-smelling breath
  • Severe urinary tract infections: Such as pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and urosepsis, with symptoms like bloody, cloudy, or foul-smelling urine, pain during urination, fever, back pain, and shivering
  • Fournier’s gangrene: A rare but serious infection between the genitals and anus, with pain, redness, swelling, fever, and malaise
  • Low blood sugar (especially if combined with insulin or certain diabetes medicines): Symptoms include hunger, sweating, shaking, irritability, fast heartbeat, confusion, and dizziness
  • Dehydration: Symptoms can be dry mouth, dark urine, decreased sweating, and dry skin; can also contribute to low blood pressure and kidney problems

If you experience any serious symptoms—such as trouble breathing, swelling, severe pain, confusion, or fever—or believe you might be having a severe reaction, contact your doctor or seek emergency medical attention right away[1][3][4][5][6].
