Epilim 200mg (sodium valproate) can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, trouble with balance or coordination, hair loss, changes in vision, memory problems, and headache[6].
Serious but less frequent side effects are also possible. You should contact your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following:
- Allergic reactions, such as skin rash, swelling of lips, face, tongue, or throat, breathing or swallowing difficulties[1]
- Liver problems (often in the first six months), which may present as severe fatigue, repeated vomiting, stomach pain, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), loss of appetite, or swelling[1][2][6]
- Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) with symptoms similar to liver problems[1][2][6]
- Unusual bruising or bleeding and signs of blood cell problems such as fever, frequent infections, or persistent sore throat[2][5]
- Mood changes, memory loss, confusion, deep loss of consciousness (coma), or suicidal thoughts[1][2][3][5]
- Problems with coordination, lethargy, reduced alertness, or balance difficulties[2][3][6]
- Breathing difficulties or chest pain[1][5]
- Rapid weight gain, swelling of legs or feet, or puffiness[3][5]
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (could indicate a liver problem)[1][2][3][6]
Other possible side effects include constipation, dry mouth, irritability, muscle pain, irregular periods, and skin problems like rashes or increased sensitivity to sunlight[3][4][6].
Children may be more sensitive to certain side effects, particularly liver problems and behavioral changes[2].
